Top 3 Qualities Of A Good Manager
Where is your focus when you hire? What is the percentage of importance when you allocate to
- Attitude / Values/ Character
- Skills/ Work Experiences
- Knowledge (Industry and Job)
Many focus on (2) and (3) and often put in 70 to 80%.
You may heard of the 20/80 rule ie the top 20% determine 80% of the output. So when we spoke to Business Owners, they always mention that (1) is the most important and they must have the basic (2) and (3) unless it is a very very niche position.
We also agree that it is easy to assess during interview and (1) is not something obvious during pre interview and pre assessment.
Given that, what are some of the qualities that we must look for in an interview especially for managerial positions
1/ Ability to communicate especially tough conversations
It’s important that a manager is be able to convey the points neutrally, clearly and concisely so each team member knows exactly what is required of them. Can the manager communicate effectively especially when it require them to handle trouble shooting and conflict/ problem resolution in order to get buy in and/or alignment amongst the team in getting the objectives met.
It’s just as important for a manager to be able to listen to constructive feedbacks and concerns and to mediate misunderstandings.
Good managers are able to listen to information and process them and yet choose their words carefully to avoid confusion or misunderstanding.
2/ Strong Work Ethic
One thing all good managers have in common is a healthy work ethic that places value on working hard and working with the team to perform at their best. They create a sense of fulfilment and achievement despite the challenges and are able to encourage and inspire their teams to perform at their full potential.
3/ Goal/ Result-oriented
Good managers can set achievable goals, plan and create strategies to meet those goals. Setting and planning SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-based,) goals and putting the team to take actions is something a manager must have.
Step by step goals into smaller actionable steps can make long-term projects easier to accomplish and help your team remain motivated throughout a project from small wins as they pass through each hurdles.
